El área alberga el Castillo de San Lorenzo, un fuerte colonial construido en 1597 en la desembocadura del Río Chagres, el más grande de la República de Panamá. El Castillo de San Lorenzo, junto con las fortificaciones de Portobelo, fue declarado en 1980 Sitio de Patrimonio Mundial por la UNESCO.

Ejemplos magnificos de la architectura militar de los siglos 17 y 18. Estos fuertes en la Costa Caribena formaron parte del systema de defensa de la corona de España para protejer el comercio transatlantico.

Fort San Lorenzo a fort from Spanish colonial times built in 1597 near at the mouth of the Chagres River, sits on the north of the Protected Area. Together with the fortifications of Portobelo, the Fort San Lorenzo was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981, and was included in the World Monuments Fund list of Endangered Monuments for 1997-1998. San Lorenzo is easy to reach from Panama by car: drive to Colon, then to the Gatun Locks there cross the Panama Canal and drive to Fort Sherman from there its about a 15 minutes drive trough the National Park.
